About Me
Octavio Dowling is a Portland-based musician, composer, and educator with a passion for helping people connect through music. He studied Music Technology at the University of Oregon, where he was awarded for outstanding scholarship, and has gone on to compose award-winning music for television, ads, films, and video games.
For the past nine years, Octavio has taught hundreds of students one-on-one, guiding them in piano, guitar, bass, vocals, synthesizers, and composition. He also served as a Show Director at School of Rock, where he led performance groups and mentored young musicians as they built confidence on stage and in themselves.
Outside of teaching, Octavio has performed with bands such as Brooklyn Del & The Revelators, Queen Chief, and The Rakes, always chasing the joy of collaboration and live performance. When he’s not making music, you’ll likely find him studying Japanese, hunting for records, or enjoying tea.
Octavio’s goal is to help make music more accessible and inclusive for all, and to share his passion with anyone ready to discover their own creative voice.

“Octavio is an amazing and incredibly patient teacher who really meets me where I'm at and tailors vocal lessons to my needs. I really appreciate how knowledgeable he is about whatever song or tune I throw at him and how every lesson feels like a collaborative process.”

“I can not say enough about Octavio's keyboard lessons, band development support, and support in learning improvisation and music theory: Octavio has been teaching me complex R&B from Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Dr. John to Bowie, Elton John, and all kinds of great wide ranging newer genres. Coming from my distant past in classical music, Octavio's lessons and musical insights were extremely supportive to plug me into playing in a rock band. Octavio is also super helpful to beginners. His band-arrangements and analysis of a band's sound, how to ramp up the energy where needed, and different options for instrumentation and specific keyboard sounds really helped me and our band pull together. I always love it in lessons when Octavio pulls out the bass and plays along - a great bass and keyboard player - not to mention a musical historian and a kind and patient old soul. Highest reviews!”

“Octavio is an awesome teacher, so talented in his own right as a musician and he brings those talents to his students. Plus he is so patient and kind. It makes coming in for your lessons a great experience!” -Gretchen L.
